    The Swift Enterprises scientific expe- dition to Mars, headed by young Tom Swift, now becomes a mission of rescue. To search for the survivors, Tom's two new inventions — an advanced spacesuit and his maglev flyer scoutcraft — play a crucial role.
    But the desolate alien world hides many a secret. A Mars-quake traps Tom and his pal Bud Barclay miles beneath the surface, where they must struggle upward amid the unexpected wonders and terrors of the Martian underlands. Fear stalks the Swift Enter- prises encampment as well — a secret enemy bent on murder has infiltrated the crew.
